Infrastructure and Utilities

GWP provides a range of services to companies and organisations involved in Infrastructure and Utilities.

  • Materials Management: Development of materials scheduling database for complex multi-stage earthworks projects.
  • Coal Stockpiles: Surveying, sampling and analysis.
  • Geology and Geotechnics: Slope stability, rockfall, diggability, rock blasting.
  • Mining Subsidence: Assessment of potential for subsidence from old workings, forensic analysis of effects of mining subsidence.
  • Groundwater and Surface Water Management: Assessment of impact and design of mitigation measures.
  • Expert Advice: Input for planning and stakeholder involvement, litigation support and expert witness.
  • Hydropower: Hydrological, geomorphological, geotechnical and surveying support for the assessment and design of hydropower development schemes.

 


Road and Rail:

Past projects include:

  • expert advice to Network Rail regarding a major failure of a coal spoil tip causing significant disruption to mainline rail services;
  • appointed as part of a team of independent experts to advise residents likely to be affected by the construction of Dublin Metro (North) Scheme providing project management, mediation and effective stakeholder engagement;
  • upgrading of trunk road in Wales: Diggability assessment and expert input including a review of pre-contract site conditions relating to major road cutting through rock.

Energy Generation:

Past projects include:

  • review of earthworks, scheduling and provision of geotechnical training for the groundworks phase of a new nuclear power station;
  • review of permissible vibration levels at 110kV transmission station for National Grid;
  • stability assessment of a 440kV electricity pylon within a sand and gravel excavation;
  • vibration monitoring during power station demolition;
  • independent assessment of coal stocks for a major UK electricity supplier;
  • review of geotechnical evidence for seabed conditions during construction of an offshore wind farm;
  • geomorphological Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Offtake Hydraulic Weir Design for micro hydropower schemes in Northern England;
  • modelling and characterisation of ungauged catchments to develop inflow hydrographs for reservoir design. One dimensional flow models were developed to determine optimum design of storage dams and reservoirs, overflow spillways, embankments, offtakes and outflow pipelines.
