Landfill

Services for Landfill and Waste Management

GWP has considerable knowledge and experience relating to landfill permitting, design, specification and construction. Our expertise in related disciplines such as geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology and hydrology ensures that our designs are stable, safe and will satisfy the demands of increasingly stringent environmental legislation in the UK, continental Europe and elsewhere in the World.

We offer a full construction design and supervision service to landfill operators.

Our Services include:

  • surveying of landfill cells for accurate verification of waste, liner and cap levels and thickness’s;
  • provision of experienced Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) monitors and engineers;
  • designs prepared in accordance with best practice whilst ensuring practical site development, operation and sustainability;
  • designs to meet the requirements of the Landfill Directive as interpreted in regulations;
  • innovative designs that maximise void space whilst maintaining the highest levels of environmental protection; and
  • designs with liners of engineered natural clays, geomembranes and geosynthetic reinforcement.

Landfill permitting

GWP has a wide range of experience of preparing inert permit applications for assessment by the Environment Agency and Planning Authorities.

GWP are able to prepare the environmental setting reports and additional stability, gas and hydrological risk assessments.

Once permitted we have implemented CQA monitoring plans and provided all necessary reports.

Landfill design

GWP have designed, provided CQA plans and provided full CQA monitoring for inert, non-hazardous and hazardous waste cells, using site derived or imported clay, BES (Bentonite Enriched Sand) or HPDE membranes.

We create landfill designs that:

  • are prepared in accordance with best practice whilst taking into account economic and logistical factors that may affect site development, operation or long term sustainability.
  • include innovative features that allow efficient and safe working and maximise void space, whilst maintaining the highest level of protection for the environment.
  • meet the requirements of the Landfill Directive as interpreted in national legislation and regulations.
  • use both natural and synthetic lining and capping materials combined with leachate and gas management systems.

Landfill Services

GWP offer a range of services which are utilised in the design, permitting, construction, monitoring and closure of landfill cells, including:

  • site investigation;
  • preparation of the stability, gas and hydrological risk assessments;
  • management of the permitting process;
  • production of the CQA Plan and Reports;
  • surveying and setting out;
  • CQA Supervision (see below); and
  • on-going liaison with the site throughout the life of the operation.

CQA services

Third party Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) monitoring is necessary to ensure that the build methods employed and final construction meet the design specification and are appropriate to the actual quality of the materials used in construction and ground conditions as encountered.

Monitoring includes daily recording of works, continuous inspection of materials being used, and on site testing and collection of samples for laboratory testing where applicable. GWP uses experienced CQA engineers who ensure a direct line of communication between client, contractor, consultants and surveyors.

Our engineers can monitor and oversee the construction process of all types of landfill cells, drainage systems and earth embankment dams.
