The aim of this project is to monitor an historically significant site for movement, including potential movement resulting from historic underground mining activity and blasting operations within a local quarry.
The site’s historical importance dates from around 40,000 years ago. It requires a sensitive monitoring scheme that ensures minimal impact to the location.
To ensure the fullest picture of ground movement is understood within the locality, the site is regularly monitored, including pre and post quarry blasting to establish if any movement has occurred that would be attributable to this. In conjunction with these surveys, ground movement monitoring is also conducted to establish the long-term effects of historic mining subsidence.
Monitoring has been in place for over 20 years; during this time operations within the quarry have been able to continue confidently without detriment to this important site.
