Clive Carpenter

Partner
Head of Water Resources and Climate Resilience, Principal Hydrogeologist

Clive has 30 years’ experience globally in groundwater and surface water resources management, climate change adaptation, flood and drought risk management, water sector governance, and strategic risk planning. He is an accomplished project manager and international development specialist.

Clive leads GWP’s water resources and climate adaptation team.  Before joining GWP in 2004, he managed an international water and sanitation programme in the Pacific and worked in senior technical and leadership roles in the water utility and environmental consultancy sectors. He holds senior technical advisory positions on national and international industry and development bodies.

In all areas of GWP water management work, climate change is being felt.  To help communities and businesses meet these challenges, our emphasis is on robust data, technical problem-solving and bringing people together.

Dr. David Jameson

PhD, FIMM. CEng, Cgeol, FGS, FIQ

Head of Earth Resources, Principal Engineering Geologist

David has 30 years’ experience in the mining, quarrying and cement sectors and leads GWP’s Geotechnical team. He consults in the UK and internationally, working with large and small clients in often highly complex geological and geotechnical settings.

David specializes in the design and optimization of excavated slopes and associated structures (tips and lagoons). He is an expert in applying conventional and numerical modelling techniques to safely maximize mineral recovery. David has consulted widely on mineral resource investigations and due diligence studies and strategy for client acquisitions and investment.

I have the privilege of working closely with client teams on their unique challenges. I enjoy using my experience to make a difference to a customer’s business.

John Sutton

Water Resources and Climate Resilience

John specialises in water resources management, urban development, and infrastructure planning and design. He has lived and worked in Asia, USA, and the UK, in technical and project management roles, and has undertaken many and varied flood, drought and climate risk assessments for public and private sector clients, NGOs and IFIs, and the extractive industries.

Expert in hydrological risk and resilience, John works extensively on climate adaptation projects and water governance, supporting communities and regions in building climate and disaster risk resilience. He has recently undertaken water security and resilience projects in Africa, Asia, and Pacific and Caribbean SIDS.

I enjoy working closely with communities, water operators and other stakeholders to fully understand their challenges, then by applying science we can help solve problems related to water security and climate resilience.

Ben Mason

Geotechnical Engineer

Ben has worked in the quarrying, ground investigation and waste sectors for over a decade, and has wide experience in the geotechnical design and assessment of excavations, tips and lagoons across a wide range of geological conditions. He specialises in the application of digital photogrammetry models, particularly for robust characterisation of rock mass properties for excavation design, stability and rockfall assessments.

Ben has experience in the design, specification, and Construction Quality Assurance of slope stabilisation and rockfall protection measures for the minerals industry.

Ben holds a BSc in Engineering Geology & Geotechnics and a MSc in Applied Geotechnics.

Every day brings an interesting challenge. I take pride in being able to apply my experience and knowledge to deliver safe and practicable solutions to the geotechnical issues faced by our Clients.

Rhys Morgans

Survey Manager

Rhys has a wealth of experience gained from 20 years working in the minerals, waste, civil engineering, and environmental sectors.

He leads the GWP surveying team and specialises in 3D measurement including topographic surveys, face surveys for rock mass characterization, earthworks design & cut/fill volumes, in the UK and overseas.

Rhys has a 1st Class honors degree in BSc Mineral Surveying and Resource Management; he also holds a GVC qualification and is an early adopter of measurement technologies.

I enjoy delivering tailored, innovative solutions for every business and customer and providing high-quality data in support of collaborative problem-solving within GWP’s multi-disciplinary team.

Paula Avendano

Water Resources and
Climate Change Scientist

Paula joined GWP in 2023 as a member of the international development/climate resilience team. She develops solutions for sustainable water resource management, climate change impact assessment and adaptation measures. Previously she has worked in water management for catchments and agriculture, gaining experience in irrigation and drainage systems, remote sensing for precision agriculture, water resources and environmental engineering.

I am passionate about using my skills to make a meaningful contribution to society, by helping improve access to water resources and supporting sustainable practices – especially where communities are most at harm from climate change.

Edward Betteridge

Environmental Scientist

With c10 years’ background in environmental consulting, Ed helps landfill waste management and quarrying companies meet their environmental goals and obligations so their projects can succeed sustainably.

Ed specialises in Environmental Permitting including the preparation of new Standard Rules and Bespoke applications, variations and surrender of existing Environmental Permits on behalf of clients.

He also carries out Environmental and Flood Risk Assessments and wide-ranging surface water management projects. Skilled at using data analysis and management software including Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and MicroDrainage Source Control, Ed provides effective designs and solutions to site-specific problems.

I am excited to work with clients to achieve more sustainable outcomes and am committed to positively enhancing local environments.

Harry Bonshor-Mayes

MSci Geology from the University of Southampton.

Geologist, GIS and Surveying

Harry joined GWP as a Geologist in 2022 after completing an MSci in Geology. At GWP he is involved with site investigations, borehole logging, and site supervision; along with UAV, GPS, and total station surveying of quarries and landfills.

Harry is proficient in GIS software and bespoke coding, adding extra value to UK-based and international clients. He has undertaken mineral safeguarding and resource assessments across several sites in the UK.

I am excited to be working with colleagues across disciplines, on interesting client projects and developing in the analysis of different datasets.

Edward Bosley

BSc in Geography and MSc in GIS and Environment

Geospatial Analyst

Ed has over 25 years’ experience working in the extractive industry and on large infrastructure projects. Ed started his career with GWP as a topographic surveyor and later managed the department. During this time, he developed the processes to capture and deliver high quality 3D survey data for UK and oversea projects. His current role utilises his passion and interest in 3D design and modelling and has consulted on some of the largest civil engineering projects in the country.

I enjoy being able to accurately model or capture 3D information in a digital environment, using a range of software to best interrogate and present the data.

Arran Clarke

Project Hydrogeologist

Arran, a hydrogeologist at GWP, specializes in integrating his expertise across water resources, environmental, and climate resilience sectors. His skill set includes conducting hydrogeological field investigations, GIS analysis, utilizing groundwater modelling techniques, and conducting comprehensive water resource assessments.

I thrive on applying my skills to diverse and complex water resources problems and delivering effective and impactful solutions for various environmental challenges.

David Huddleston

BSc in Physical Geography, MSc Remote Sensing and GIS, Aberystwyth University

GIS Specialist

David is a GIS specialist at GWP, supporting data use across the business. He is experienced in the use of GIS, remote sensing, and earth observation to provide efficient solutions to environmental problems.

David has consulted in several data sparse environments, developing novel approaches where richer datasets, such as those available to use in the UK, are unavailable. He specialises in workflow automation and data visualisation, delivering clear insights from large, complex datasets.

I really enjoy the practical applications of science – for me it’s about problem-solving and capturing valuable insights using the latest technology in spatial data.

Dan Watkins

Senior Surveyor

Dan is a seasoned professional in the field of land surveying, with a specialization in topographic surveys. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for precision, he excels in utilizing advanced methodologies to deliver accurate and comprehensive survey data.

With years of experience under his belt, Dan has honed his expertise in various surveying techniques, including drone surveys, cut and fill volume analysis, quarry face mapping, and 3D modelling. Leveraging cutting-edge technology has enabled him to provide clients with detailed insights into their land assets, facilitating informed decision-making and project planning.

Emma Butler

Drawing Office Manager

Emma has over 20 years of experience working in the minerals and environmental sectors.

At GWP, Emma heads the Drawing Office and produces quality CAD and GIS draughting and graphic services, and delivers technical drawings and presentation material to the highest standard. These outputs enable impactful and successful communication and comprehension of profoundly technical data.

Cheryl Lydon

Secretary

Cheryl joined GWP Consultants LLP in 1994, over 30 years ago – having completed her Private Secretarial Certificate in 1989.

Cheryl provides office support to the Partners, Accounts Manager and technical team, reviews and quality controls reports and carries out internal audits for GWP’s ISO 9001:2015 Certificate.

As the longest serving member of the GWP team, I continue to take pride in the contribution I make to the Practice and using my experience and knowledge to assist others. I consider myself to be helpful and courteous and provide a welcome for staff, visitors, and clients alike.

Georgia Mayne

Office Manager

Georgia joined GWP in 2015 after completing college and provides office support to the Partners, Accounts Manager, and technical teams. She organises travel/accommodation, assists with the preparation of invoicing, data entry and supports the Health and Safety Manager with guidelines for the practice – and much more!

I am excited to be working in this busy and international office. I am a team player, helpful and courteous; outside of work I enjoy playing football and help run a local men’s football team.

Jeremy Baldock

Consulting Geotechnical Engineer

Jeremy has a wealth of experience in mineral resource assessment, rock and soil slope assessment and design, planning and design of quarrying operations including tips/lagoons, landfill development, and earthworks. He is an expert in geotechnical analysis, including limit equilibrium, numerical, and rockfall modelling. He supports Clients’ hazard appraisals and Geotechnical Assessments for hard rock, sand, gravel, and clay operations.

Jeremy was a partner with GWP for over 20 years and has been vice-chair of the QNJAC Geotechnical Committee, guiding best practices within UK quarrying. Before GWP, Jeremy was a civil engineering materials company manager, gaining knowledge of drainage systems and materials, groundworks, and geotextiles and geogrid materials in earthworks projects.

Dr. Alan Cobb

PhD, CEng, MIMMM, FGS

Associate Consultant

Alan Cobb is an industry-renowned expert in the field of geotechnical engineering, with a geotechnical consulting career spanning nearly 50 years. He is a former senior partner at GWP, where he worked from 1976 to 2022 and is now a consultant to the practice.

Alan has extensive experience in matters relating to excavations, fill slopes, materials handling, and environmental impacts arising from mining and quarrying. Alan has co-authored publications on slope stability, tip design and mining subsidence and has frequently acted as expert witness in Public Inquiries, the High Court, and the Lands Tribunal.

Mark Pritchard

BSc, MSc, CEng, MIMMM, FGS, MCSM

Associate Consultant

Mark has worked extensively in geotechnical consultancy for over 30 years, including for GWP, where he was a partner for the past decade.

Mark specialises in mineral resource assessment and planning, landfill and civil engineering developments and geotechnical engineering. He has considerable experience of environmental permitting requirements associated with quarrying projects, including inert landfills, recycling, and waste recovery schemes. He acts as an independent expert advisor to Clients seeking counsel, mediation, or dispute resolution.
